What To Do If Your Car Breaks Down On The Road In Albania
Albania's roads range from busy coastal highways to quiet mountain passes with no phone signal for kilometers. Where you break down changes what "getting help" actually looks like — here's how to handle it wherever you are.
On a highway or in town
This is the easiest case. Get the car off the traffic lane if you can, hazard lights on, and call for help. Mobile signal is generally reliable in and around Gjirokastër, Sarandë, Tepelenë and Përmet, so a phone call or WhatsApp message will go through without issue.
On a mountain road or pass
Roads like the SH75 through the Vjosë valley or the SH4 toward the coast pass through stretches with weak or no signal. If you lose signal, keep driving slowly (if the car is drivable) toward the nearest village or higher ground where signal is more likely to return, rather than waiting in a dead zone. If the car isn't drivable, stay with it — it's easier for other vehicles and eventually for us to find you than to find someone who has wandered off looking for signal.
At night, anywhere
Visibility is the priority. Hazard lights on immediately, and if you have a reflective triangle or warning light, place it behind the vehicle. Stay inside with doors locked unless it's unsafe to do so — a stationary car at night is hard for other drivers to judge, especially on unlit rural roads.
If you're a tourist and don't speak Albanian
You don't need to explain much. A WhatsApp message with your live location pin and the words "car broken down, need tow" is enough — location and phone number matter far more than a detailed explanation. Albania's general emergency number is 112 if the situation involves injury or immediate danger, not just a mechanical breakdown.
While you wait
Stay visible, stay off the traffic side of the vehicle, and keep your phone charged if possible — a dying phone battery on a remote stretch is its own small emergency. If you can, note any landmarks (a bridge, a village sign, a distinctive building) — it helps confirm your location faster than GPS coordinates alone sometimes do on unfamiliar roads.
